The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played by two or more people. It is a betting game with the object of winning a pot (the total amount bet in a hand). The rules are slightly different for each variant, but the general principles are the same.

In a standard game of poker each player is dealt 2 cards face down. There is a round of betting that starts with the player to the left of the dealer who can either call the current bet, put in chips equal to or double the size of the big blind (raise), or push their cards to the dealer face down without raising them (fold).

Once all players have called the first round of betting the dealer deals 3 cards on the table that anyone can use, known as the flop. Another round of betting occurs and then a fourth community card is dealt, known as the turn.

There are many variations of poker, but most involve at least 6 players and the goal is to win the pot. Each hand is a unique situation and requires quick instincts. There are no cookie-cutter strategies that work in all situations, but practice and watching experienced players can help you build your own. Also, keeping a journal of your hands is helpful to identify your strengths and weaknesses. This workbook will help you memorize key formulas, internalize them, and make them a part of your intuition.
